Elon Musk’s Starlink gets licence to offer satellite internet services in India

Elon Musk’s Starlink has received approval from India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to operate satellite-based communication services in the country. This makes Starlink the third company to be granted a GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) licence in India, following Reliance Jio and Eutelsat’s OneWeb.

With this licence, Starlink is one step closer to launching its commercial satellite internet services in India. The company had applied for regulatory approvals back in 2022 but faced delays due to national security concerns and ongoing policy debates around spectrum allocation.

Interestingly, Starlink was at the centre of a recent clash with Reliance Jio over spectrum policy. While Jio advocated for auction-based allocation, Starlink pushed for administrative assignment. The Indian government has sided with Starlink’s stance, clearing a path for its rollout.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s Kuiper project is still awaiting approval. Starlink’s entry is expected to significantly expand high-speed internet access, especially in rural and underserved regions of the country.
